American Samoa is a territory of the United States. The High Court is the highest court of law in American Samoa. It is also the Territory’s only court of general jurisdiction. The High Court combines the trial and appellate jurisdiction of a state court system with some of the jurisdiction that federal district courts exercise elsewhere.
Chief Justice F. Michael Kruse is currently accepting applications for two judicial clerkship positions for the 2022-23 term, which will commence sometime around August or September and continue for a period of one year.
The duties of the judicial clerk are as follows: (1) work closely with his/her assigned justice briefing cases and providing legal research and writing at the trial and appellate levels; (2) work closely with staff counsel compiling, editing, and preparing court opinions for publication; (3) assist staff counsel and justices with reviewing and revising the rules of court; (4) maintain the Court’s law library.
Each clerkship position comes with a $45,000 annual salary plus round-trip transportation to the Territory and subsidized housing.
Applicant either must currently hold a juris doctor degree OR be in enrolled in the final year of a juris doctor degree program from an ABA accredited law school.
Required documents. A complete application includes the following documents: cover letter, resume, legal writing sample, official law school transcript, and no more than three letters of recommendation.
Cover letters, resumes, and writing samples may be submitted separately via post mail or electronically (i.e., email or facsimile); however, the documents will not be accepted if they are postmarked or time stamped after the February 1, 2022 deadline.
Recommendation letters may be submitted electronically or by post mail after February 1, 2022.
Official transcripts may only be mailed or emailed directly to the High Court by the registrar’s office of the issuing law school or made available for direct download from a website authorized by the issuing law school. Official transcripts may be submitted after February 1, 2022; nevertheless, any applicant who is unable to provide their official transcript by February 1st should timely provide an unofficial copy in its place and give notification on when the official copy will become available.
All applications, including incomplete applications, will be reviewed and evaluated beginning February 2, 2022.
