Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System (IAALS) Research Intern Position

IAALS is looking for research assistance from a student intern, from now until early April. They are looking for a research intern to assist with legal research for the Rule One Initiative. The student will research and draft a memo on the subject of third party financing.

Third party financing is the practice by which an outside investor pays for some portion or all of the litigation costs in a lawsuit, in exchange for a portion of the final settlement or judgment. This practice is occurring more and more often in the United States, and IAALS is interesting in exploring the possibility of developing recommendations as to ethical and procedural parameters. Before making that decision, they want to understand the landscape of existing laws, regulations, proposals and commentary. Hence, the memo will summarize background on the topic, applicable case law, current proposed rules and legislation, academic commentary, existing applicable laws, and comparative information from other common law countries. A first draft of the memo is due by April 1, 2016 with a completed memo due by April 15, 2016.

Parameters: We anticipate that the research and writing will take between 40 and 60 hours.
To complete the project within our time frame, the student would need to be available now.
